Here is the latest Illinois sports news from The Associated Press

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Matthew Stafford passed for 321 yards and three touchdowns in a dynamic debut for the Los Angeles Rams. The veteran quarterback led LA past Andy Dalton and the Chicago Bears for a 34-14 victory Sunday night. Stafford found Van Jefferson for a 67-yard touchdown on his second pass for the Rams. Stafford hit a wide-open Cooper Kupp for a 56-yard TD to open the third quarter, and he found Robert Woods for a clinching score with 3:17 to play. Dalton passed for 206 yards in his Bears debut, while rookie quarterback Justin Fields rushed for a 3-yard score while getting a handful of snaps in his NFL debut.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Justin Fields operated with a calm and cool demeanor with the limited snaps that he got. The Chicago Bears rookie quarterback was in for only five plays during Sunday night’s 34-14 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but he did score his first professional touchdown during the third quarter. Fields, who was the 11th overall selection in April’s draft, completed both of his passes for 10 yards, and his only rushing attempt was for a 3-yard TD.

CHICAGO (AP) — Wilmer Flores homered and drove in three runs, Kris Bryant scored two against his former team, and the San Francisco Giants hung on to beat the Chicago Cubs 6-5 for their season-high seventh straight win. Owners of the best record in the majors, the Giants matched their longest streak since a seven-game run in August 2020. They were rolling along with a 6-3 lead in the seventh before the Cubs scored two while chasing Logan Webb (10-3). The Cubs had the tying run on in the ninth after Jake McGee gave up a one-out double to pinch hitter Patrick Wisdom. But Frank Schwindel and Ian Happ grounded to first.

BOSTON (AP) — Leury Garcia hit a game-ending home run with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Chicago White Sox over the Boston Red Sox 2-1. After Boston reliever Garrett Whitlock struck out Eloy Jiménez and Yasmani Grandal to begin the inning, Garcia behind 0-2 before hitting a 98 mph fastball over the center-field fence. It was the fifth homer of the season for Garcia, who is filling in at shortstop with starter Tim Anderson on the injured list. Chicago took a 1-0 lead and a three-hit shutout into the ninth before Craig Kimbrel struggled with his control and blew the save.

CHICAGO (AP) — Tina Charles had 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 79-71. The Mystics (12-18) — who played without Elena Delle Donne (back), Ariel Atkins (personal reasons) and Myisha Hines-Allen (non-COVID illness) — have a one-game lead, with two games to play, over the Los Angeles Sparks and the New York Liberty for the final playoff spot. Chicago (15-15) needs to win one of its final two games to secure the No. 6 seed — and a first-round game at home — in the playoffs. Azurá Stevens led the Sky with a season-high 18 points.
